Nintendo Switch breaks US sales records for March

The hybrid console registers the best month of March since data is taken in North America, the NPD Group agency has confirmed.

Nintendo has recorded the best month of March in history at the level of console sales in the United States with Nintendo Switch. The latest report published by NPD Group reflects an exponential growth in hardware spending during this period, marked by the beginning of the confinement of the population by coronavirus in many states in the country.

Best sales quarter since 2010: Nintendo DS beat

In total, we are talking about 461 million dollars billed through the sale of consoles, mainly Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One; which represents an increase of 63% compared to the figures reported just a year ago that same month. If we stick to the domestic machines of Sony and Microsoft, their sales improved by 25%, thus reversing the downward trend of recent months. Again, motivated by an unconventional interest —without notable offers or specific sales periods through— that has benefited all parties.

According to the information and analyst Mat Piscatella, who signs the report, we are facing the best first quarter of a year in North American history since the first quarter of 2010, when Nintendo DS was in full swing. "The year-on-year sale of 2020 analyzed, with the sum of hardware, software, accessories and download cards, gave a total of 3,000 million dollars, a decrease of 4% compared to a year ago," he points out, a drop in the Total computation much lower than expected, taking into account that at the end of the year PS5 and Xbox Series X will arrive in stores.

In terms of video games, Animal Crossing: New Horizons (available from March 20 exclusively for Nintendo Switch) was the best-selling title in the United States during March, beating Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and MLB: The Show 20, which they close the podium. In the case of the Nintendo title, in addition, digital sales are not computed, so the feat was greater. Resident Evil 3 Remake takes fourth place.
