Former Sony developer thinks Xbox Series X is "a beast" compared to PS5

A Studio Liverpool veteran, who worked at WipEout, suggests that Sony is "resting on its laurels" with its current policy.

We are approaching the month of May and there are still many doubts that exist around PS5 and Xbox Series X: catalog of launch games, price, operation of their technological innovations … At this point, we know much more about the new console of Microsoft than Sony, something that generates perplexity in some professionals in the sector. For Chris Grannel, who spent nearly fourteen years on PlayStation Europe and Studio Liverpool (WipEout), Xbox Series X is "a beast" compared to PS5.

"Sony is resting a bit on its laurels"

As commented on RDX Podcast, "PS5 is not a bad console, it is an absolute beast as a piece of hardware, but it is only a piece of hardware slower in many aspects of what Microsoft has managed to gather," he begins by saying. As he wields in the conversation, there are not a few professional developers who agree to consider the Xbox Series X as a hardware that is far superior to that prepared by Sony in terms of power.

"I think Sony is resting a little on its laurels," he adds. “They have achieved a massive market share and have led; and now they have done a little what with PS3, according to what I am hearing ”, he adds.

They fear the same mistakes will be made as with PS3

It should be said that Sony itself acknowledged having sinned "arrogance" during the phases prior to the launch of PS3, where they came to be at a time of total market dominance with PS2. Price, then, was one of the main problems compared to the competition and "we did not listen to users", acknowledged Shawn Layden, head of global studies at Sony Interactive Entertainemnt when he made these statements.

As we saw in this comparison, the Xbox Series X hardware will have 12 TFLOPS of power with 52 CUs at 1,825 GHz; meanwhile, the PS5 GPU will have 10.28 TFLOPS with 36 CUs at 2.23 GHz. On the other hand, the speed of the console's hard drive will be 5.5 GB per second in the case of the Japanese machine, compared to 2.4 GB per second from Microsoft.
