Shenmue futures: Yu Suzuki prefers a closed world to an open world

The creator of this cult saga acknowledges that open worlds are all the rage, but he is looking into creating narrower universes.

After long years of silence, Shenmue 3 went on sale, a game that does not conclude the Ryo Hazuki story, so it is to be expected that it will continue in future installments. So, at least, the legendary Yu Suzuki, creator of the franchise and author of great SEGA titles like Out Run or Virtua Fighter, wants it. According to the creative, open-world games are all the rage nowadays, but Suzuki prefers to focus his attention on making more compact video games when developing future Shenmue chapters.

He said this in an interview with IGN Japan, where he also stressed that he wants to improve facial animations, something that has been one of the most criticized points of Shenmue 3. Regarding the construction of worlds, he comments the following: “I think that there is a image that the open world is magic and that all the great titles focus on that because of the current fashion in games. " So, he wonders if it would not be more interesting “to have a closed space instead of continuing with the open world”.

More people in the cities

That does not mean that the creative gives up on creating richer worlds. Suzuki says it would like to create denser cities in terms of the number of NPCs, among other elements. "If there aren't many people, it doesn't look like China, so I would like to increase the number of characters walking in the city at the same time. If the city is the size of Torimai, its density can be quadrupled. " According to the developer, as an engineer, he likes to take on new challenges, even when they aren't "too exciting."

As an example of this he puts the possibility that the characters move more smoothly in narrow spaces. "I don't think any study has managed to achieve smooth movement or exploration in a small area."

Shenmue 3 has been available on PS4 and PC since last November. Its development began after the success of the Kickstarter campaign, although it has finally had the financial backing of Deep Silver, which has been in charge of editing the game.
