Policies to foster diversity at Riot Games begin to pay off

Since the female harassment scandal, the North American company has taken action on the matter and has hired more women compared to the previous year (1%).

2018 was a troubled year within Riot Games. Accusations surfaced that referred to a toxic work culture. As a result, allegations of former employees through, the creators of League of Legends, Valorant and Teamfight Tactics, among others, decided to tackle the problem and start taking action. From Riot they define 2019 as a “foundational year”, since they have sought diversity, which has translated into a 1% increase in the number of women working in the company compared to 2018.

Through a message published by Riot Games itself, the measures they have established during the employee selection process are detailed, as well as the code of conduct that workers must follow at work. All these solutions have resulted in a slight improvement in two specific aspects. As we anticipated, the percentage of women has increased by 1%, which in global calculations means that of all employees, 22% are women.

Underrepresented minority employees also increase

Meanwhile, Riot Games' division in the United States has confirmed that 9% of its headquarters-based employees come from under-represented minorities. The increase, in this case, is also 1%. The developer defines as a minority all those African American, Native American, Alaska Native and Latino or Hispanic origin.

In leadership positions, women make up 21% of the total, while there are 19% of women as managers, 1% more than in 2018. On the other hand, the number of new employees hired ranges from 27 to 31 %. In Riot USA, 9% of bosses belong to minorities, although there is no data for 2018, so it cannot be determined if they have grown. Instead, managers have increased from 8% to 9%. The percentage of recruited has doubled from 6% to 12%.

Riot Games reports that more than half of hiring in director positions has improved the diversity of the studios, since 27% are women and 18% minorities in the executive. Still, they acknowledge that there is still room for improvement.
