PS5: Unreal Engine 5 demo rendered at 1440p "most of the time"

The new graphic engine of Epic Games details the aspects that were not said during the presentation and that allow us to know more about its possibilities.

Epic Games surprised this Wednesday with the presentation of its new graphics engine, Unreal Engine 5, a peripheral view tool that aims to be compatible not only with PS5, Xbox Series X and PC, but also with the current generation of consoles and mobile devices. After verifying what it will be capable of graphically with an imposing demo visually, the North American company has revealed that the demo was being rendered at 1440p "most of the time".

Dynamic resolution for the Unreal Engine 5 demo on PS5

This is, according to technical terminology, Quad HD; a non-standard but extended 2560 x 1440p resolution (3,686,400 pixels; four times the 720p resolution). Therefore, it did not reach the much desired 4K resolution that is expected to be imposed during the next cycle of machines. In short: it was dynamic resolution.

Nick Penwarden, Vice President of Engineering at Epic Games, explained to Eurogamer the reason for this decision, which does not mean that Unreal Engine 5 will not be able to offer experiences in 4K resolution with ease since this has only just begun .

"It's interesting, but (UE5) performs very well with our dynamic resolution technique as well," Penwarden begins. "So when the GPU is overloaded, we can reduce the screen resolution a little bit and adapt to it," to ensure that there are no drops in the frame rate per second and that the GPU is not over-suffering. "In the demo, we actually use dynamic resolution, although it ends up rendering at 1440p most of the time," he says.

Late 2021, commercial launch of Unreal Engine 5

In fact, it should be noted that developers will not be able to access a preliminary version of Unreal Engine 5 until early 2021; We will not see the commercial version until the end of 2021. The new generation of high-end graphics is not a leap overnight, but from Epic Games they trust the possibilities of the tool in the long term.

Its flagship video game, Fortnite, will transition to Unreal Engine 5 eventually, in mid-2021; What is already guaranteed is that the video game – which already has more than 350 million players around the world – will be available on PS5 and Xbox Series X from the day of the consoles' launch.
