Ghost of Tsushima: the 5 most amazing details of the State of Play

Black and white mode, combat system between Tenchu and Assassin's Creed, character customization … This is the new and expected PS4 exclusive.

He had been praying and had been offering information with a dropper, but yesterday was the day of Ghost of Tsushima. The new Sucker Punch game (the creators of Sly Cooper and inFamous) featured its own State of Play, in which the developer showed around twenty minutes of gameplay. Throughout them we were able to discover many of the characteristics of the game, which we knew for little more than its spectacular graphics and its captivating setting. For those who missed it, we will review the most striking details announced during the event, in which the title was ratified as one of the last great PS4 exclusives. The wait until July 17, the release date, will not be easy.

Black and white mode, and photo mode

Akira Kurosawa would be proud. One of the most applauded details of Ghost of Tsushima is the possibility of playing the whole adventure with a curious black and white filter that also adds effects to make it look like a photochemical film. There will be changes in the grain of the image, the texture and even streaks and flaws on the screen, as if everything were recorded on an old roll of film. The members of Sucker Punch have assured that it is their particular tribute to classic samurai cinema, of which they declare themselves true fans. This function can be activated from the beginning of the game, which will also incorporate a photo mode to take full advantage of its setting and graphic finish, which overwhelm Shuhei Yoshida himself.

Nature as a guide

Ghost of Tsushima is an open-world game that invites us to explore the region that gives it its name, Tsushima, in late 1274, when an invading wave from Mongolia hit the shores of Japan. Therefore we will have the usual mechanics in sandboxes, such as a map and a compass that marks the distance to the places we select. But there will also be news, such as the fact that nature plays a fundamental role and it will depend, for example, that we reach one or another objective. Thus, the State of Play showed us some very curious characteristics, such as the possibility of invoking the wind to blow in the direction in which we have to go. All the flora on the stage will be rocked by the air and will bend at your mercy to show us the way. And it will not be the only participation of the environment. To discover hidden areas that do not come on the maps, we will have to be aware of the columns of smoke on the horizon, of strange birds that lead to hiding places and secret objects, and even to the appearance of wild foxes that can guide us to different altars and places of worship that serve as fast travel points.

Fight like a ghost or like a samurai

Halfway between Tenchu and Assassin's Creed, the game will leave it to our choice at all times how we want to play. We can choose, for example, to face battles like a samurai. If so, we will invite our enemies to tense duels one on one, waiting for them to fail and we can counterattack and open their defenses. There will be a simple combos system and even a "1 hit, 1 kill" mode. If, on the other hand, we prefer to face the story as a ghost, we will have to use stealth to defeat our enemies from the shadows, or pull all kinds of tricks and tricks to distract and kill them quickly, see smoke bombs, throwing weapons and even a hook with which to snatch the weapon. The decision will be ours, and although we can specialize in one, at any time you can switch to the other to enjoy a more varied and entertaining gameplay.

The customization of the protagonist

The State of Play also gave us a first look at more than 25 aspects for Jin, the protagonist, which can be personalized with different helmets, outfits, hats, armor and even masks. In addition, according to Sucker Punch, clothing will affect gameplay and depending on what we wear, we will be promoting one style of play or another. Do we want to be a samurai or a ghost? Raise our defense or improve our stealth skills? To change the color of each garment we will have to collect all kinds of materials scattered around the map, as in Horizon Zero Dawn, and depending on how much we explore and complete we can even find enchantments for the team that add several "bonuses" to the character. We will have to choose between enchantments such as Okuniushi, which gradually restores our health outside of combat, or Unseen Respite, which causes smoke bombs to cure us for 25% health. And although he did not show it, Sucker Punch also made it known that we will have skill points and a skill tree to improve and personalize Jin even more.

Ghost of Tsushima

Japanese voices

To finish, another confirmed detail is the possibility of enjoying the game in the original language of its characters, Japanese. The title will offer in the settings the possibility of having the Japanese dub, in front of which will be Kazuya Nakai, whom many of the followers of One Piece will recognize as the actor in charge of voicing their favorite swordsman, Roronoa Zoro. Nakai will be the actor in the dubbing of Jin Sakai, the protagonist, who will be played in English by Daisuke Tsuji, whom we have already been able to listen to in Death Stranding, Prey and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, among others. Presumably, like all major Sony releases, Ghost of Tsushima also arrives dubbed into Spanish, but the final decision will be ours.
