PS5 and Xbox CPU will be a bigger advance than SSDs, says director of Scorn

Ljubomir Peklar distinguishes from those who believe that solid memories will make more difference than the powerful brains of the new consoles.

The next generation of consoles from Sony and Microsoft, PS5 and Xbox Series X, will be characterized mainly by two major changes: CPUs equipped with a dozen teraflops (10.28 and 12, respectively) and extremely fast SSD storage compared to of the current cycle of machines. For the director of Scorn it will be those powerful CPUs that will represent the true generational leap.

Ljubomir Peklar, director of the Ebb Software game scheduled for Xbox Series X and PC in 2020, has stated in a meeting with MS Power User his opinion on the matter: “Everyone is boasting about SSDs as the next big change, and yes , SSDs will help a lot to move assets and load times, but the real culprit for the current generation problems is the CPU. This is where the biggest difference will be in the next generation of consoles ”, he points out.

100 times faster bandwidth with custom PS5 architecture

Xbox Series X and PS5, plenty of power and speed

For a few months we have already known the final technical specifications of both one console and the other. In the case of PlayStation 5, after the presentation led by Marc Cerny we know that the CPU will be 8 Zen 2 cores at 3.5GHz with variable frequency; all this accompanied by a GPU of 10.28 TFLOPS at 2.23 GHz. The jewel in the crown, in this case, is the SSD memory, which although it will be 825 GB, less than the competition, its speed will be much higher: 5.5 GB per second. The current bandwidth of a PS4 is 50-100 MB per second, so the difference is abysmal; of the order of 100 times greater.

In the case of Xbox Series X, the final specs leave an all-powerful console, the most powerful ever on paper: a 3.8GHz Zen 2 8-core CPU with 12 TFLOPS on its 1.82 GHz GPU. In this case, the SSD will be more storage, 1 TB, but the speed will be much less, 2.4 GB.

It remains to be seen what both hardware translate to; At the moment, Unreal Engine 5 has been shown in action with a stunning technical demo running on a PlayStation 5. As for Scorn, this atmospheric adventure by Ebb Software will be out on PC and Xbox Series X sometime in 2020. , a work inspired by the works of HR Giger.

Both PS5 and Xbox Series X will be released sometime in the last leg of 2020 at an unspecified price.
