The video of sharing games on PS4 was a "stupid" idea, according to a former Sony

Adam Boyes explains the origin of that E3 2013 video in response to Microsoft's initial decision with Xbox One not to share games.

E3 2013 is remembered for many things, not only for being the prelude to the start of the current generation, the cycle of PS4 and Xbox One. One of them is the video that Sony published shortly after Microsoft confirmed in its conference that Xbox One was not going to allow used games to be shared; a measure subsequently reversed. The Japanese company took the opportunity with Shuhei Yoshida and Adam Boyes as protagonists. 21 seconds that Boyes himself now qualifies as a "stupid" idea.

The idea was from Adam Boyes himself

The origin of the materialization of that video does not have much mystery, but now we know more about it through a conversation of the then Vice President of Public Relations of Sony Interactive Entertainement. Boyes, who left Sony in 2016 to pursue other professional purposes, recounts how the moment was. He said, "Hey, Shu, I have that stupid idea for this video; this silly type of viral video. ” Although Boyes initially refused to appear, it was Yoshida himself who told him to accompany him in front of the camera because it was Adam's own idea.

And they recorded it. At the conference, an image headed the room where the PS4 presentation took place in Los Angeles where it was read: “exchange games in a store; sell them to someone else; Lend them to a friend… or keep them forever ”, referring to used video games. Just the opposite of Microsoft's initial idea for Xbox One. He also says they showed it to Jack Tretton and Andrew House, former CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, respectively; and they both gave the go-ahead.

Boyes does not regret, however, what they did, although he does assume the triviality of the act.

PS4 lend games

2020 will not have an E3 conference after its cancellation due to the coronavirus pandemic. There will be digital alternatives such as Summer Game Fest, where a multitude of large publishers will gather with digital presentations scattered between the months of May and August. Microsoft will make a monthly presentation around Xbox Series X; Sony, meanwhile, has not disclosed its letters. PS5 and Xbox Series X will launch in late 2020.
