The true story behind the alleged Gears of War 3 for PlayStation 3

No, the Epic Games game was never intended to see the light on Sony's home console. They tell what that leaked video is really about.

Epic Games has confirmed that Gears of War 3 was never planned to see the light on PlayStation 3, but to understand the reason for this possibility, we must go back to a leaked video where the title appeared on the previous Sony home console. Those sequences correspond to the by-product of an Epic internal testing process for Unreal Engine 3, which was used for both Gears and the Unreal Tournament; it was never part of a real product designed for PlayStation 3. ”

What is that video and why it was thought that Gears of War 3 had a version on PS3

Everything came up this past Tuesday, May 19. Forums and social networks were beginning to flood with an image and a video, which is still active and that we leave attached in this news, titled: "Gears of War 3 PS3 Build May 2019 2011". It was, however, a real PS3 development kit running the unforgettable Epic Games video game; the last one in which they would work from this saga at the end of the straight line of life of Xbox 360.

The video includes technical data, numbers such as the rate of images per second and jerks typical of an unfinished version of the video game. The most notable change is that the interface is shown with the button mapping of PS3 and not Xbox 360. With this premise, it seems complicated to think that this is not real. It is, but without context one could erroneously conclude that Gears of War 3 had been planned for PlayStation 3.

A few hours after the video was published, Cliff Bleszinski, father of the title, commented on Twitter: "99% is false." And he adds: "You have to ask Tim Sweeney", CEO of Epic Games. "It may have been a test for the engine or something; But I doubt it". And that's when we go back to the decications of Epic Games for Kotaku: it was a mere technical demonstration to check the operation of Unreal Engine 3 on the Japanese machine.

Gears of War 3 ended up launching on the market in September 2011 and became one of the most beloved installments in the series; so much so that in Metacritic it has a 91 out of 100. You can read our original Reviews of the game here, an enjoyable title today on Xbox One thanks to the backward compatibility.
