PlatinumGames boss thinks PS5 and Xbox Series X won't be as innovative as Switch

Atsuhi Inaba, head of the Japanese study, stresses that this is a purely personal opinion, based on the data available to him.

Atsuhi Inaba, leader of the PlatinumGames studios is clear about this. For the Japanese creative, neither PlayStation 5 nor Xbox Series X will offer elements as innovative as Nintendo Switch. This was recognized in an interview with VGC, where he stressed that it is a totally personal opinion. "I don't want to sound like I know everything about the new consoles or that they are boring, but with the information I have right now, I have not observed anything extremely surprising," he says.

According to Inaba, the announcements about the new generation consoles are "good and interesting". He is happy for them in his role as developer, as they have better technology to work with. However, consider that there are no big surprises that make you feel like in previous generations. "Now, I look at the ads and I think, 'oh, it's great.' And then the next minute, I say, 'Hmm, what should I watch on Netflix tonight?' ”

The example of Nintendo Switch

Anyway, as an industry, it admits that everything seen promises a lot. "I don't want it to be perceived as very negative, but to offer another example from my point of view, Nintendo Switch was very innovative in its ability to make a desktop console also portable." According to his words, the Nintendo machine broke a barrier that perhaps people did not even know existed.

For Inaba, the hybrid of those from Kyoto have opened new possibilities. "I think Game Boy and DS did that: There were a lot of surprises in them. If you compare that to a simple improvement in graphics or just faster and better … obviously they are great, but they don't have the same quality inventiveness that surprised me on past consoles. ”

In the same interview, the developer confirms that PlatinumGames is not interested in joining Xbox Game Studios. Despite the rumors, the company is not aware that Redmond's are considering acquiring them. What is clear is that the current strategy of PlatinumGames, which involves publishing its own video games, is contrary to an acquisition.
