Tencent to become Marvelous' largest shareholder

The editors of Senran Kagura and Doraemon: Story of Seasons, among others, will receive a capital injection from the Chinese giant.

The Chinese company Tencent continues with its expansion plan. After investing in studios like PlatinumGames, Epic Games or Yager, the company will acquire 20% of the shares of the Japanese publisher Marvelous Inc., which has published video games such as Senran Kagura, Story of Seasons, Daemon X Machina or the most recent title. from Doraemon. Bloomberg, the medium that has published the information, points out that Tencent will provide the capital to develop video game franchises.

According to Bloomberg data, which was released through a Marvelous press release, the digital entertainment giant will invest 7 billion yen (about 60 million euros) to buy the shares through its affiliate, Image Frame Investment. The publisher will sell 8.62 million shares for 576 yen each. On the other hand, shareholders such as Amuse Capital or Nakayama Hayao will sell 2.83 million and 708,600, respectively (and at the same price).

More money more games

Marvelous' idea is to use that money to continue launching deliveries of existing sagas, as well as new products over the next three years. This includes, of course, Story of Seasons or Daemon X Machina.

"The main reason Tencent made this investment is probably due to their interest in learning how to develop games from Japanese companies," explains analyst Hideki Yasuda of the Ace Research Institute. "The investment will help Marvelous deal with an uncertain situation in the world economy." In addition, says the analyst, it will allow you to market your most popular games in the western market.

It is not the first time that Tencent and Marvelous have strengthened ties, as the Chinese company has worked on a video game based on the intellectual property of Story of Seasons. The Japanese have decided to strengthen their relationship so that they can create more games and design new initiatives that allow them to expand globally.
