PlayStation Controls: Sony Patents Wireless Induction Charging Accessory

Sony applies the registration of a new patent related to its DualShock controls (or DualSense, if it were planned for the future PS5 console).

Sony Interactive Entertainment has applied for a patent related to an improved wireless charging accessory on its PlayStation controls. The publication, approved on February 27, refers to a charging system without cables that is added directly to the rear of the remote (DualShock / DualSense) to provide additional power to the internal one.

The information, advanced by WCCFTech, includes a fairly detailed description of the operation of this possible accessory, which, like any patent, does not have to materialize in a commercial product. Operation is simple: this accessory accessory for the PS4 controller (DualShock) or that of the future PS5 (DualSense) uses an induction system to provide power without the need for cables; as if it were a charging base, something already established in the consumer electronics market (mobile phones, tablets, smart watches …).

We also see a couple of buttons on the back of the accessory, next to the PlayStation logo, which is why Sony considers using the accessory as a way to add two additional action commands at the same time. The latter is already done by the official accessory for PS4 called Rear Buttons, of which we made an Reviews a few months ago.

As we read in the official description: "A wireless charging adapter that can be placed in a computer game controller and that can be inductively paired to a charging base to wirelessly recharge a battery in the controller." Given the composition of the chassis, the accessory is powered by standing on a charging base. Thus, when we remove the remote (with the accessory attached) from the charging base, we keep everything: remote, base and additional buttons.

Sony has promised that the future DualSense controller, nomenclature for the PlayStation 5 controller, "will transform the world of the video game." Better lugs, longer battery life, haptic feedback, improved front panel, and a new button, Create, to replace Share.

The launch of PS5 is scheduled for Christmas 2020 at a price yet to be determined and with a catalog of games for now unknown. This output catalog will be released soon. Here we tell you everything we know about the console.
