PS5 Digital Edition and Standard will be “identical”; only missing disc reader

Jim Ryan therefore hints that there will be no differences in its storage (825 GB). The price of both PlayStation 5 models is unknown.

PS5 revealed this past June 11 its first official games, both from third-party companies and exclusively by PlayStation Studios. The event ended by showing two different models of the machine: PlayStation 5 Standard and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, but there will be no difference in their specifications beyond the absence of a disc reader.

PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition, without confirmed price in both

Jim Ryan, CEO and President of Sony Interactive Entertainment, confirmed in a meeting with CNET that these are “identical products”. There will be no cut in the hardware capacity of one or the other. Although the price has not transpired, his words seem to indicate that there will be no differences in internal storage, although he has not explicitly said so. Not surprisingly, we refer to the statements of the British director:

PS5 Digital Edition and Standard
Standard PS5 will be somewhat more bulky. Both models can be arranged horizontally and vertically.

“As you saw, there is a slight difference in the shape of the two consoles. I am sure you have also been able to observe that the aesthetics of the design are consistent between the two. And so they are, except that the digital model does not have a disk reader. That is all. Apart from that, they are identical products ”, he asserts. In the absence of knowing the price of both models, what is certain is that the standard model will have 825 GB of internal storage.

For Ryan, the rationale for a digital-only model of the console is merely a response to the current market trend. In fact, as the GameSpot media point out, after the last financial year Sony reported sales of around 66% only from the digital market (PS Store) during this first quarter, so from January to March 2020 two of every three PS4 games were purchased digitally.

PS5

PS5 will be released worldwide in late 2020. Sony continues to work on making the console backward compatible with the entire PS4 catalog and will continue to bet on AAA games, although they will not forget to give good coverage to independent games.
