PS5 backward compatibility: Sony continues to work on “over 4,000 games” on PS4

PlayStation 5 backwards compatible with over 100 PS4 games at launch

Sony reiterates on behalf of Jim Ryan that they have not canceled their plans to make PlayStation 5 backward compatible with PS4. They keep working on it.

PlayStation 5 will be backward compatible, at least, with PS4. This has been reiterated by Sony in the voice of Jim Ryan, CEO and President of Sony Interactive Entertainment, in a meeting with CNET. The manager dispels any hint of doubt about the commitment of the Japanese company to make its next new home console compatible with almost all games of the current generation.

“We have said that PS5 is designed to play PS4 titles. We are in full process with the publishers and developers exhaustively testing a library of more than 4,000 games, ”he begins by saying, referring to the approximate number of video games published on PlayStation 4 during the last seven years. “We are happy with the progress that has been made,” he adds.

Backward compatibility, PS5

PS5 will be backward compatible with over 100 PS4 games at launch

If we look back, last March it was Mark Cerny, architect of PS5, who said that PlayStation 5 was going to have a hundred PS4 titles backwards compatible at launch. “We recently put the system to the test with the top 100 PS4 titles (by playing time) and hope that almost all of them will be playable on launch day”; although nothing came out regarding the three previous generational cycles that people demand so much.

Nor if that backward compatibility will be solely physical or also digital. For its part, Microsoft has revealed in detail what its improved backwards compatibility will be on Xbox Series X.

According to Cerny’s statements, soon after they clarified on the official website that PS5 will eventually be backward compatible with most of the 4,000 games that currently make up the library of titles published on PS4: “We hope that compatible titles will run at an increased frequency on PS5 so they can take advantage of higher frame rates per second and higher resolutions. ”

On June 11, the first exclusive PlayStation 5 games were announced, as well as other cross-platforms that will also be released on PS5. Also, the console was revealed for the first time and a new look at its controller, the DualSense, was offered. There will be a total of two models starting Christmas 2020.
