Resident Evil 8 Village: everything we know to date

All the known details of the new Resident Evil 8 announced during the Playstation event.

It was one of the big announcements from the PS5 event. Resident Evil Village, with a word game included to evoke VIII (8) as a new installment for 2021 and new generation consoles. Capcom is sweet with its most prolific saga, which already exceeded 100 million units sold weeks ago and has also recovered the level of quality required for one of the historical franchises in the survival horror genre. The game, for now, is announced for PS5 and also for Steam and Xbox Series X, scheduled for 2021 without a specific date and with an upcoming update of what is to come that will take place during the month of August. What do we know to date of this eighth chapter of the main saga? We detail it.

The trailer places us in a new town, with new enemies and old nightmares. It is the best summary to talk about a hostile environment, with a huge castle presiding over the area in which the game takes place, disturbing characters -such as the four women who appear in a room- and other elements that are worth shredding. There are werewolves, something that was said in the leak that has finally been confirmed, and there is Ethan. He was the protagonist of the seventh installment of the saga. There’s also Chris Redfield. One of the protagonists of the first Resident Evil and many others, who appeared at the end of the last numbered installment and who had his own chapter, Not a Hero. But Chris here has changed.

And we are not referring to the umpteenth redesign of the character, although this time much more recognizable than in Resident Evil 7. Everything seems to have returned to normal for Ethan Winters, with a normal life with his family. But it goes to waste for a dark Redfield, villain? We don’t know that. “It will not return in the line we expected,” say the developers. It is clear that this time Chris will have an important presence in the development of the game, and surely this also means that the plot is linked to the general universe of the saga, something that was missing in the last chapter.

Developers Talk: No load times and realistic graphics

The developers released a special message to accompany the main trailer. In it, they explain that they will treat the game as a Resident Evil 8 with what it implies. The use of Village for the title is not just a play on words, it will affect the gameplay. The title will continue with a development line linked to terror, but “with a little more action” compared to its predecessor. Among the improvements that we can find, more realistic graphics, immersive audio and no loading times to get fully into a world never seen.

RE Engine, engine for the Next Gen

The studio works with the RE Engine, the graphics engine that has changed the technical section of Capcom’s games. Titles like Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 7, Devil May Cry 5 or Resident Evil 3 work with this engine, which developers want to take to a new level: “We are ready to take everything we have learned from these titles and our internal work to optimize it with the latest new generation machines, and thus take our vision to new heights ”.

The importance of the villa

The Village concept and the characters we will find will have a relevant role in the development of the game. A crucial role will be played to make sense of the location they offer us, and that also affects the design of the game. It will be in the first person, allowing us to feel like Ethan, and keeping the brand tension of the house. Exploration will be key, so something more open is expected at the world level, although we do not know to what extent.

Where is the game located?

It seems that we are returning to Europe, although this time it will not be in a lost town in Spain. During the inventory display, which was quite generous by the way, it was seen that there was a coin under the name of 100 lei, which responds to the type of money used in Romania. This would place us in an area full of options and legends for all tastes, as indicated by our partner Rubén Martínez.

Other theories and details

Among the details that we find reviewing the trailer and theories on the net, we see how there is a symbol that repeats itself repeatedly with a shape that looks like a fetus. Something that may be linked to the daily life of the townspeople, and who knows if linked to a kind of sect as happened in Resident Evil 4. Romania is the birthplace of the figure of Vlad Tepes, the historical dracula. Seeing that there are werewolves or something similar, we can expect anything. Vampires or something like that? The women in the trailer have blood on their clothes.

The Umbrella logo is present on a stone plank that comes out, so considering Chris’ relationship with the new company, it is clear that he will have a relevant role in the game. In addition, this plank, like the presence of some statues and other elements of this type, seem to indicate that we will have puzzles related to classic objects and elements of the saga. Or at least, we wish, why deceive him. Finally, we just need to know if that huge and pompous hall will give us a return to exploration inside a mansion – where are the gloomy women standing? – as in the first game in the saga. In August we will know more about all this.
