PS5: Spider-Man demo ran on a low-end DevKit

The demo of ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man’ shown on a PS5 DevKit last year was impressive, but it only gave a foretaste of what the final hardware will be able to do.

With the demo, Sony demonstrated above all the loading times, which could be reduced from over 8 seconds (PS4 Pro) to less than 1 second on the PS5 DevKit in a selected sequence. This can probably be further optimized, because, as one now points out again, the hardware corresponded to a low-end (speed) DevKit last year. In addition, the game code of the demo was not even particularly optimized for the presentation.

The demo said about a year ago:

“Spidey is on the screen in a small place. Cerny presses a button on the controller and starts a fast travel interstitial screen. When Spidey reappears in a completely different place in Manhattan, 15 seconds have passed. Then Cerny did the same with a next generation Devkit connected to another TV. (The Devkit, an early “low-end” version, is hidden in a large silver tower with no visible components.) What took 15 seconds now takes less than one: 0.8 seconds to be exact. “

It is now clear that the PS5 primarily focuses on speed aspects and eliminates all bottlenecks. This approach resulted above all from previous discussions between various studios and the PlayStation architect Marc Cerny, who wanted to know what was most important to the developer with new hardware.

In the meantime, it is becoming more and more exciting to see how the final hardware performs when all components really come together in their final version.
