DualSense controller in size comparison, back button attachment compatible?

Playfront

Yesterday evening, Sony introduced the new DualSense controller for PS5, a radical modification of what has been known so far from the DualShock controller.

The new DualSense controller primarily stands for new features such as haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and 3D audio, while maintaining familiar features such as the light bar and touchpad.

With all these innovations, including the new 2-color design, the controller initially seems quite bulky, which is mainly due to the somewhat rounded shape. However, this is deceptive at first, as Sony has already noted.

“With the adaptive triggers, we had to think about how the components would fit into the hardware without giving it a bulky feel. Our design team worked closely with our hardware engineers to place the triggers and actuators. The designers could then draw the lines of how the exterior of the controller would look and feel, with the challenge of making the controller feel smaller than it really looks. ”

If you place both controllers on top of each other, there are hardly any differences in size. The handles are a little longer at the bottom and a little more curved on the outside, which ultimately benefits the ergonomics. In general, the DualShock 4 controller was perceived as a bit too small. The upward curvature and a little more space on the inside underneath have given the designers more space for the interior.

The touchpad is now a bit larger, the option and create buttons have been angled, the PlayStation button now consists of the PS symbol, and other elements such as the speakers move only minimally. In addition, a small button or LED for the integrated array microphone was obviously installed in the middle? The PlayStation symbols are also no longer colored. An audio jack for your own headsets is also included, as was confirmed later.

The size comparison is based on the face buttons, the digital directional pad and the analog sticks, which can be assumed that their size has not been changed.

Backbutton attachment compatible?

The question now arises whether the recently released back button attachment will be compatible with the DualSense controller. Sony has not yet commented on this, which is why you can only make guesses based on the pictures.

Unfortunately, not all connections of the DualSense controller can be seen below where the back button attachment would ultimately be located. However, its connection is flexible. In any case, the basic shape at the bottom on the inside seems to have been retained, just shifted further down. There are slight differences on the inside of the handles, which are slightly arched on the DS4, but in this case they do not play a major role. For this, the back button attachment already thought of the microphone that the DS4 does not have this.

Difficult to say whether the back button attachment will actually be compatible. Personally, I found the attachment to the DS4 generally somewhat fiddly and not 100 percent matched to the controller. Maybe because it was also developed for the DualSense controller. I would tend to say that the back button attachment can continue to be used. Time will tell.
