WD_Black P10: features and analysis of Western Digital external hard drive

Plug and burn.

Western Digital is a brand that has specialized among other things in the hard disk sector. One of his latest proposals are the WD_Black P10 drives, external hard drives designed to play. These are units of different capacities, from 2TB to 5TB that aim to offer high performance to optimize the gaming experience on both console and PC. Among its features is the design with a metallic housing and black finishes and the use of USB 3.2 Gen connection. Something to keep in mind is the guarantee of up to three years.

The idea of the product is to offer an attractive design and finishes both in durability, for the casing in question, as for the appearance, robust and that generates more confidence than other similar products. We are not talking about throwing the hard drive on the floor, but the feeling of solidity is much more evident. Although here, the really important thing is to know how it works when storing and transferring data.

During the tests we could do with the device, we saw that the reading was placed at about 130 megabytes per second. On the other hand, the writing speed moves above 120 megabytes per second. This means, in short, that it is placed in the high performance zone of other similar hard drives (70-80 euros).

Another feature is that it comes in a fully plug and play format. The disc is prepared as exFat, so it is directly compatible with PC, MAC and consoles (PS4 and Xbox One). We have been testing it on Xbox One X, and the writing speed has not seemed greater than what the console's internal hard drive itself has, so in that sense the performance is more than optimal. The same goes for the tests performed on PC, although of course it does not compete with our internal SSDs.

It exists in several sizes ranging from 2TB to 4TB or 5TB, and it is postulated as a good option to use as an external hard drive taking into account what today's games are asking for in console. It is true that the decision not to incorporate USB-C, now that it is being standardized, may surprise, although the standard for consoles is still normal USB, so it has no direct effect on current platforms. Of course, for some models of laptops (Macbook) already focused on USB-C and Thunderbolt no longer fits. Finally, note that it is not too loud.

In short, its main virtues are its compact and robust design, its plug and play spirit and a good reading and writing speed as a complement to current consoles, although for PC surely the competition and the variety of faster options – also more expensive – It is larger and you can miss the increasingly frequent USB-C connection, although not for current consoles.
