John Carmack is not happy with the evolution of virtual reality

The co-founder of id Software has received an award for his career in which his contributions to the VR are recognized.

Virtual reality is a technology that has been with us for many years, but that has not completely crystallized to date. However, large technology companies have opted for it almost at the same time. PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive have been just some of the products that have been launched in recent years. And there is John Carmack, co-founder of id Software and also responsible, in his role as chief technology officer, of Oculus VR. The developer has recognized that despite the progress, there is still a long way to go.

A premature prize?

He has declared it in the third edition of the VR Awards, in which he has been awarded not only for his contribution to virtual reality, but also for his "lustrous career, which has been developed over several decades." The Accenture VR Lifetime Achievement Awards is the first prize of this style awarded by the virtual reality industry. Therefore, he is in an embryonic state, something that Carmack himself has made clear, who thinks that the award could have come to him “prematurely”.

According to the founding member of id Software, he is not entirely happy with the progress of this technology. "I am often somewhat grumpy in the office because I am not truly satisfied with the pace of progress we are making." He says that when he is immersed in virtual reality he sees "magic", but that his brain is continually reminding him that there is still work ahead. "So it will take me a little while to feel good about my achievements."

Although Carmack has remembered the beginnings of virtual reality in the nineties, he considers Palmar Luckey as the precursor of the current VR thanks to the Oculus Rift prototype. "All this technology does not help much until the user service is valued," he says.

For its part, the organization has flattered Carmack and said it is an inspiration to them. "As hardware and technology continues to evolve, John will surely lead innovation in virtual reality."
