Frictional Games offers free source code for Amnesia: The Dark Descent

To celebrate the release of Amnesia: Rebirth, the team makes both this game and A Machine of Pigs Open Source.

Frictional Games, the team behind video games like Amnesia and SOMA, has announced that from now on, players can download the source code for Amnesia: The Dark Descent and A Machine for Pigs. In a press release, the developer has stated that the decision to offer the source code is due to the tenth anniversary of the video game’s launch, which occurred in 2010. In addition, the studio is about to publish a new installment of the saga, Amnesia : Rebirth. Developers will allow users to use the code as they wish, as long as they do so within the framework of the GPL3 license.

“Modding has been a big part of Amnesia,” explains Thomas Grip, Creative Director at Frictional Games. For example, over the years The Dark Descent has accumulated over 10,000 mods and addons on ModDB. This flow of content from users has been incredible to watch, for which we are so grateful to the community as a whole. It is time to give them something in return.

Will not leave the stores

Although the code will be publicly available, Amnesia: The Dark Descent will continue to be available in stores for purchase. Frictional Games recalls that the game and all its content remains the property of the company, but players will be able to do what they want with the code, as long as, as already mentioned, they respect the license agreement.

Amnesia: Rebirth is the next video game in the series, a completely new title that will put us in the shoes of Tasi Trianon. The protagonist finds herself in a desert, an inhospitable place from which she will have to get out alive at all costs. However, to find the answers you are looking for, you must travel to other locations such as caves, ruins or alien sites, while solving mysteries. The game will be released on October 20 for PS4 and PC.
