Wonder Woman: her main trajectory in the history of videogames.

Her name is Diana, daughter of Queen Hippolyta, and warrior princess of the Amazons on Temiscira Island. Created from clay on the beach of Paradise Island as an offering to the goddess Hera, its origin was a miracle granted by the most ancient Greek Gods. Diana would receive the blessing of numerous deities, becoming a demigoddess endowed with the strength of Heracles, the intelligence of Athena and the beauty of Aphrodite. Raised with the culture of ancient warriors, she managed to unseat any enemy that faced her. A fighter like no other, she has been a part of the DC superhero cast since 1941, as well as being a powerful ally of the Justice League and the Trinidad saga. Created by William Moulton Marstonen, the Amazon has become DC’s favorite heroine, although she has never fanned the bond as tightly as before.

After the box office success of Wonder Woman (2017) directed by Patty Jenkins, a new era has dawned for Diana. Recently incarnated by the magnificent Gal Gadot, the Amazon franchise is back with its imminent Wonder Woman 1984 premiere on December 18. Premiere that we will see on the big screen, and that we can see simultaneously also through the HBO Max platform.

The origin of the Amazon

Batman and the rest of the DC gang have had their own lead both in and outside of video games. However, not all characters have been treated and loved equally. If we stop to think for a moment about the titles starring Wonder Woman, the answer is easy: There is not. Why has it taken decades to give our oldest female warrior her own movie, while other of her DC peers have headlined feature films, animated series, and video games? Why have they done so much better than her? One of the peculiarities of his figure over the years is that it has changed so often and in such a confusing way that no version has had the opportunity to take hold. None of them quite fit in, at least as well as some of their peers did. The Amazon has not only appeared in comics for nearly a century, but was also part of a popular television series starring Lynda Carter in the 1970s. A character that has changed over time, a lot. In the 2000s, Wonder Woman was introduced to a whole new generation thanks to the animated series Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, with her own animated feature film. From here, the heroine fallen in combat would resurface under a new concept.

For the first time the course of the character would change years later with the takeoff of BvS, and his subsequent blockbuster in Wonder Woman. A character that did not shine long ago, except for now. Wonder Woman has conquered the world of comics, television and animation, but one medium in which the Amazonian warrior has not yet led is that of video games. If we start to review his career in video games we will see that his figure has not been as present as it should. Superman had her first video game in 1979 (Atari 2600) and Batman in 1986 (Amstrad, Spectrum, MSX) and unlike them, the Amazon has not starred in any solo title to date. Not for this reason, it does not mean that he has not participated in numerous titles each more enjoyable, and in which in a more or less direct way he has not ceased to dazzle on his own merit. Today at Meristation we pay him this tribute with his main career in the history of video games.

Justice league squad

Over the years there have been a few Justice League titles where our Amazon has been seen. His video game debut dates back to 1995 with the Justice League Task Force. Before Blizzard released its first Warcraft, it released a few fighting titles based on the DC universe emulating the classic Street Fighter recipe. In Justice League Task Force we can play with Diana as a playable character, meeting the direct appearance of her arch-enemy Cheetah. From this moment on, we would place the character within a specific and specific genre, that of fighting.

A few years after its first appearance, we find Injustice for All (2002). This was DC’s first side-scrolling beat ’em up for the GBA that featured our heroine appearing, along with the famous team from the Justice League. In this we must destroy the plans of the evil Lex Luthor in 12 different stages of the game. A title in which the skills of our heroes are required to advance in it, each with their own unique qualities. Just a year later we would see Justice Chronicles, also released for the same fashionable laptop.

Raising the bar on her journey, and continuing with her trajectory based on the Justice League, we find Justice League Heroes launched in 2006. Many of the games in which the Amazon participates have significant similarities: we can play with Diana as a cooperative character ( always within the Justice League concept), or in other more competitive environments focused entirely on the fight. On this occasion, the game, as expected, is also focused on the Justice League and the role it plays in it is rather secondary, focusing the entire main narrative on the characters of Batman and Superman. Shortly after Justice League Heroes: The Flash was released, based on the character of Flash, and where Wonder Woman also had a place, but this time as an optional support character.

Sand skills

A fighter like her had to put her fighting skills to the test and prove her power in the arena. In 2008, Ed Boon and his team pitted characters from Mortal Kombat against those from the superhero franchise in Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe. In this we found two only female faces from the DC franchise: Catwoman and Wonder Woman.

DC Online Universe (2011) focused exclusively on the superhero franchise released for PC, PS3, PS4, and XOne. In DC Online Universe we must fight against the forces of Brainiac, who intends to take control of Earth. This includes our own choice to exercise good or evil, being able to play as a hero or a villain. In that sense, we can create a purely custom class or be inspired by a classic selection of DC characters, such as our favorite Amazon, Flash or the Joker. The title offers a reasonably generous selection of combat styles and modes, as well as choosing our own travel mode. A title that is still active, and that has its own recently confirmed Wonderverse.

Lego saga

On the DC character roster he was among the first to hit the WB Games version of Lego games. A classic saga that includes cooperative support, family action, vehicles and abilities unique to each superhero. In the series we saw her for the first time in Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, being the first appearance of a DC character that was not Batman in a Lego game. The title was followed by a sequel in 2014, Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, which was much more of an adventure that encompassed the DC Universe more completely in all respects. He also had his moments of glory in the Lego Movie Game, Lego DC Super Villains and Lego Dimensions, which allowed him in the latter to play in the game with his iconic invisible jet.

A little justice for her

The team behind Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe created in a new IP using DC superheroes and villains in Injustice: Gods Among Us. A title set in the universe where our Amazon shone the most. In addition to fighting in the arena, we will have a story mode for each of the playable characters. The Justice League gathers to defend Metropolis from an assault by Black Adam, Sinestro, Doomsday, and Ares. In this one, Diana and Aquaman confront Ares, after the latter is defeated and the Joker tries to destroy Metropolis with a nuclear bomb.

LittleBigPlanet 1 and 2 received a DLC in the form of DC Comics. The downloadable included new skills, complete levels, and a short story mode. A DLC pack of skins that included Brainiac, Bizarro, Lex Luthor, Sackboy, Sackgirl, Superman, Supergirl, and SackWoman. A more than curious result, merging the most classic superheroes in a platform title in the Sackboy universe. A brief approach to the DCEU, which was the closest thing to creating our own squad in a unique world.

The Scribblenauts title also paid tribute to the DC franchise and its superheroes with Scribblenauts Unmasked. Its protagonist Maxwell, lands in Gotham City itself, meeting Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and some members of the Justice League. The Scribblenauts-style characters are practically adorable, and a joy to see them together again in this original crossover. A title that differed from the usual fighting genre by being a hybrid of puzzles and adventures, with a considerable duration of up to 8 to 12 hours.

DC Legends is a title for IOS and Android in which we must recruit the heroes of the Justice League to be able to fight with them. A tactical game with a wide range of DC heroes and villains in which we will forge alliances and face rival teams fighting across the galaxy. We will play with 3 characters, one main and two support, attacking in turns. In addition to the Amazon, we have many more heroes (Batman, Superman, Flash …) that we will have to unlock in the course of the game. A free-to-play game, with its own interesting biography of DC characters built into the game.

Infinite Crisis is a multiplayer focused on combat, in which two teams of five players battle it out to victory. The title includes many of DC’s main characters, plus dozens of characters from different universes and of all kinds. Characters like Batman, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Stargirl, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, and many more. Our objective will be to defeat the enemy base and eliminate its nucleus. A game based on the concept of League of Legends, with its own DC universe.

Wonder Woman returned to Injustice, with its sequel, Injustice 2 in 2017. A version widely surpassed in many aspects of its previous version, and in which we also had a story mode of the character and different events of the Amazon. With the help of the bracelets we will be able to stop the bullets in conjunction with the Lasso of Truth, and we will be more than capable of wielding both his sword and shield with precision in combat. Her evolution of the story mode follows the continuation of the first installment, being an ally of Superman and a defender of the Regime established in Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Tip-toeing in virtual reality

Warner Bros. brought us one of the closest experiences to fighting as the Justice League in 2017. Following the film’s release in theaters came the virtual reality cinematic experience with Justice League VR. In this brief VR experience we will fight against parademons like Wonder Woman, and we will revisit Themisicira, in addition to getting involved in the locations of each of the members of the Justice League.

This time we also found a popular mobile game from the franchise. In DC Unchained we can play with Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Flash, Aquaman and Green Lantern. The particularity is that we can play as a superhero or villain. A title with a comic book aesthetic and emulated by vignettes, which can be compared to Marvel Future Fight (MFF). The history of Unchained is determined based on the chosen alliance. There are two alliances: hero and villain. In the villains section, the story begins with Harley Quinn, while in the heroes section it begins with Flash and other members of the Justice League.

God save the amazon

DC's best-known Amazon in video games

The Amazon is at the top. Although it has not stopped being present in video games, we can say that for now they have not done it justice. For one of the oldest and best known on the battlefield, she hasn’t had a chance to shine yet. The paucity of female-driven superhero stories has been a reality for many years, which thankfully has changed. Following the news of the new DC Gotham Knights title, it’s time for another hero to headline a triple-A title: Wonder Woman. Unlike other DC superheroes, video games have not been fruitful for our Amazon. Will they be one day? What we do know is that now is the best time for it. Give this woman a shield. Give it the title it deserves, and we wait so long.
