PS5: Sony patents cartridges to expand storage memory

The company will use SSD memory for its new console, PlayStation 5. This information reinforces the idea of the return of these units.

Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan has applied the registration of external storage cartridges in the Japan Patent Office (JPO). The Japanese company, which is currently immersed in the development of its new console, PlayStation 5, works on an SSD storage system that, if these physical units are used, will have cartridges as an expansion.

What do we know about these official Sony cartridges

In the absence of knowing what the registration of this patent materializes and if it will be used for PS5, there are more and more indications that point to the support that Sony will use to derive part of the archives of some of its games in these external and interchangeable units , which would be rotated depending on the game that the user runs; something similar, saving the distances, to what happened with PlayStation and PlayStation 2, in that case only to save the games games.

PS5 cartridges

If we look back, on December 28, 2018 another record related to these units in the form of a cartridge was applied; also, on August 5 of this year the same was done with another very similar version. From Let’s Go Digital, which echo this information, they attach one of the images of these storage units with pins that would serve as connectors for the possible input port of the hardware to which they would be connected; presumably PlayStation 5.

The public record of the patent leaves the following description: “This is a recording medium capable of recording various data, such as a character, an image, an animation, a sound and a program. Through the loading of the opening provided by the console with the end through which the pins of this cartridge are supplied, it is possible to read the data collected by this cartridge ”.

The description undoubtedly supports the argument: a unit by which the console (PS5) will be able to read previously stored data or write others later.

This is not the only patent recently registered by Sony. This past Monday we knew the application of a patent related to the future PlayStation 5 controller, similar in design to the current DualShock 4 and still without a name.

The launch of PS5 is planned for Christmas of 2020, although we still do not know exit games or price; a console that wants to become “the fastest in the world” accompanied by an ambitious AMD Ryzen Zen processor.
