Star Wars: Lucasfilm president survives criticism and receives support from Disney

Kathleen Kennedy’s continuity was called into question after the premiere of the new film trilogy.

Kathleen Kennedy was the right hand of Steven Spielberg and always had a relationship with George Lucas, especially thanks to Indiana Jones. When the creator of Star Wars decided to sell his empire to Disney, she was chosen to lead Lucasfilm’s new path. Since then, the strategy has changed, mainly due to the creative problems that the new sequel trilogy went through, as well as Han Solo: A Star Wars Story. Everything seems to indicate that Kennedy will continue to lead the company for years.

Bob Chapek, CEO of Disney. He has participated in the Walt Disney Company’s 2021 Annual Meeting of Shareholders, where he has had to answer a very direct question: he has been asked the possibility that Jon Favreau, showrunner of The Mandalorian, will take over the reins of Lucasfilm in the case Kathleen Kennedy getting fired. Chapek has closed ranks and has shown his support to the president: “We are looking forward to Kahty directing the activities of all Lucasfilm operations for many years to come.”

Production problems in Star Wars

The problems in Star Wars centered on its cinematic universe. The Last Jedi caused discomfort in part of the community of followers, while The Rise of Skywalker failed to conquer neither critics nor many fans. Behind the scenes, there were many production problems, with several directors being laid off. Nor did the spin-off projects fare well after the Han Solo movie’s low-key box office performance. Fortunately, television has become a great hope for the saga.

Several of the independent products that were intended for the cinema have moved to Disney +, a platform that has already reached 100 million subscribers worldwide. Thus, films dedicated to figures such as Obi-Wan Kenobi or Lando have been converted into limited series. The North American giant recently announced an expansion plan that includes numerous television series and some films.
