PS5: Patent describes Share-Play on a new level

Again, a patent from Sony has surfaced showing an interesting technology that may be used on the PS5. This could take the Share-Play feature to a new level.

The patent is described relatively extensively and shows a technology referred to therein as a split controller. Thus, it is theoretically possible that each single player game becomes a multiplayer game in which the players each use different controller inputs or share one and the same game.

For example, one player serves the sticks, another the analog cross and another the face buttons. So tasks like running, jumping or shooting can be shared. The goal is interactivity among the players, which works both locally, but also via the cloud and online. All players will see the same picture on their screen. In addition, this can be limited to only one player, but also on several characters in the game or even alternately with only one player. Think of games like 'The Dark Pictures' and what opportunities would arise.

As other examples, different roles are mentioned, for example, a player, the sniper better, one on the offensive, etc. So you could pass the control with a single touch of a button to this.

Also of interest is the use in the context of PlayStation VR, in which the second player is no longer just a spectator, but an active part of their own game, similar to what you already do with the second-screen support. The applications are also numerous as mentioned.

Whether the patent is actually used or disappears again in the drawer, of course, remains to be seen. However, since the share feature was one of the most successful innovations on the PS4, it can be assumed that Sony will continue to expand just that.
