Takamoto Katsuta reveals why his 2026 WRC season hit its worst day

Takamoto Katsuta explains factors behind his “worst day" of the 2026 WRC season

Toyota Gazoo Racing’s Takamoto Katsuta slid to sixth place after a chaotic opening day at Rally Japan, branding it the worst outing of his 2024 World Rally Championship campaign.

Opening Mishaps Cost Time

Katsuta’s troubles began on the damp first stage when he clipped a bank, causing a left‑rear puncture that cost 6.7 seconds. The unexpected tyre change forced the Japanese driver onto a hard compound for the following wet sections, adding further deficits.

Mid‑stage, a momentary loss of control sent the GR Yaris onto grass, leaving Katsuta 43.8 seconds behind the leader at the midday service.

Tyre Strategy Failed to Recover

Seeking to claw back lost seconds, the team opted for a soft/hard tyre mix on the expectation of lingering moisture. The blend proved ineffective, and Katsuta finished the day 1 minute 03.6 seconds adrift of the front‑runner.

Post‑stage, Katsuta dismissed pressure to win as a factor, instead blaming incomplete pacenotes from the route‑note crew, which he said left him without crucial information about evolving stage conditions.

Team Principal Weighs In

Jari‑Matti Latvala, Toyota’s team principal, observed that Katsuta may have over‑reached in his desire to claim a home victory, remarking that excessive focus can disrupt a driver’s natural rhythm.

Latvala also highlighted the difficulty of judging surface dryness, noting that while the route‑note crew supplies data, drivers must still rely on visual assessment, a challenge comparable to Monte Carlo’s ever‑changing grip.

With two stages remaining, Katsuta faces the task of converting his recent Kenya and Croatia victories into a strong finish, while Toyota looks to refine its pacenote workflow ahead of the rally’s conclusion.
