FIA granted Mercedes a review hearing over the Monaco Grand Prix result and George Russell’s penalties, setting a decision date for Saturday when the stewards will decide if new evidence warrants a full hearing.
New evidence must meet a strict threshold
The process begins with the stewards assessing whether Mercedes introduced a “significant and relevant new element” that was unavailable at the time of the original ruling. If the threshold passes, the case moves to a second hearing where the substance of the challenge is tackled in detail.
Alpine’s earlier overturning raises doubts
Alpine succeeded in overturning Pierre Gasly’s two pit‑lane speeding penalties after proving the official timing system had used an incorrect distance for one of the pit‑lane sectors. Formula One Management admitted the timing error, leading to the rescission of both penalties and restoring Gasly to third place. The correction instantly cast doubt on the other drivers’ sanctionings, particularly George Russell, whose initial 5‑second pit‑lane penalty was compounded by a later drive‑through for an incorrectly served penalty.
Other teams eye the provisional results
McLaren has formally protested the reinstatement of Gasly’s penalties, while Red Bull is said to be seeking the return of Isack Hadjar’s podium finish. McLaren driver Oscar Piastri was penalised during the race and, after the penalties were no longer applied, dropped from fourth to fifth, a change that could ripple across the points battle with teammate Kimi Antonelli.
