Former F1 Presenter Calls Aston Martin’s “Red Flag” as the Team Faces Performance Struggles

Former F1 presenter identifies Aston Martin "red flag" amid performance struggles

Adrian Newey’s dual role as Aston Martin’s team principal and design chief is now flagged by a key insider who says the team failed to involve its drivers during the season’s start.

Red Flag Over Driver Inputs

Will Buxton, former driver and pundit, weighed in on the Up to Speed podcast, warning that Newey admitted “I didn’t consult the drivers as much as I should have.” Buxton added that the lack of driver feedback could leave Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll stuck with a car that “feels vastly uncompetitive.”

Balancing Design and Leadership

Newey joined Aston Martin in 2025 as managing technical partner and shareholder, before being officially appointed team principal for the 2026 season. “I’m not sure that drivers can really input very much on the design of the front wing,” former racer David Coulthard quipped, noting that a driver can only say “I want more grip and power.” He pointed out that “you simply can’t give the same amount of energy to two things.” Coulthard warned that an extra‑heavy technical workload is diluting Newey’s focus, especially as he now manages the whole team.

Sky Sports commentator Naomi Schiff highlighted how Newey’s role overlap might “break the mesh” between overseeing the entire outfit and pushing for technical efficiency. Buxton suggested the sport could tolerate a lone chief engineer, but the current structure threatens to pull resources from essential performance areas.

Driver Feedback Limits

Both drivers and pundits agreed that insight from the cockpit is valuable only at a strategic level, not for minute aerodynamic tweaks. “Drivers can say I want more grip, not how to shape the wing,” Coulthard reminded the audience, pointing out that the team’s current communication gap is a sign of deeper structural issues.

As the 2026 season approaches, the intensity of having one individual juggle technical and principal duties could sharpen the tension between design ambition and on‑track performance.
