Max Verstappen has announced a development‑tracking partnership with Belgian driver Dries Van Langendonck that blends management, coaching and McLaren involvement.
A New Structure for a Young Talent
Management Under the Verstappen Brand
The Verstappen group will take charge of Van Langendonck’s management, with Raymond Vermeulen leading the effort. This marks the first time the Verstappen camp has represented an external driver beyond the Vermeulen family.
Vermeulen has previously turned down other inquiries, so Verstappen’s decision signals strong confidence in Van Langendonck’s potential. “Only drivers with clear promise warrant this kind of partnership,” Verstappen explained in a press briefing at Spa.
McLaren Junior Alignment
Dries remains a McLaren junior, a status Verstappen emphasised as a key component of the plan. The driver will continue to be part of McLaren’s development programme while receiving additional guidance from the Verstappen team.
Verstappen acknowledged the longstanding ties between the two families, noting that networking began long before the current arrangement. “The relationship goes back a decade through our karting families,” he said.
Coaching and Simulator Support
Beyond management, Verstappen will act as a driver coach, contributing his own experience and simulator expertise. He has previously helped other young drivers transition from virtual to real racing.
Training sessions take place at the Verstappen Racing simulators in Tilburg, Netherlands, where Van Langendonck can hone technical skills and racecraft under Verstappen’s tutelage.
Financial Backing and Career Guidance
The partnership includes strategic financial backing, with the Verstappen team committing funds and collaborating with McLaren to cover budgetary demands in Formula 3 and Formula 2.
Verstappen stated that strategic team selection is critical, citing past cases where poor choices have stunted talent. “Choosing the right team at the right level is essential,” he commented.
Verstappen’s Vision for a Formula One Future
Verstappen repeatedly underscored that the ultimate goal for Van Langendonck is Formula 1. He compared the Belgian’s current performance to his own at the age of 15, describing it as exceptional.
Yet he stresses individuality: “Every driver must find their own path; copying me would add pressure.” He intends to transfer the lessons learned during his own career to the young Belgian, aiming to equip him with the experience necessary for the pinnacle of motorsport.
