It is well known that the DualShock 5 controller for the PS5 will be further revised. A current patent from Sony now shows the approach that is retrofitted quite similarly to the DualShock 4 controller – the backside buttons.
The front of the controller shown is therefore almost identical, except for the missing PlayStation button in the middle. Likewise, the digital directional pad appears to have been adjusted slightly. However, it has to be mentioned here that this is not a design patent, but rather specific functions that can be protected with it are described. The final design can ultimately also differ.
Backside buttons integrated
The biggest innovation is then on the back, where additional buttons have now been integrated, which could be programmable similar to the DualShock 4 attachment. In addition, buttons on the back are described with which the handles of the controller can be extended, for example to adapt them to your hand size.
The smaller buttons also have several functions and are pressure-intensive, so that the controller recognizes whether you just tap it or press it correctly. All four controls are easily accessible with the middle finger, as they say.
Should Sony implement this patent in the DualShock 5 controller, the new adapter for the DualShock 4 controller would also be easier to explain in order to bring both controllers to parity. The only thing left to be seen is whether Sony will ultimately implement the patent.
