Mercedes now trails Ferrari by 73 points in the constructors’ championship, amid a mounting wave of reliability complaints that may dampen the German team’s confidence.
Reliability Concerns Undermine a Dominant Package
Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard, on the Up To Speed podcast, warned that Mercedes will be frustrated by the bank of software glitches and power‑unit failures that have flagged the Brackley outfit all season.
He highlighted that, while Mercedes has engineered a fast car that has won every Grand Prix except two, the package has been undermined by “running problems, racing incidents” and a “complex software system” that struggles to tune battery temperatures in the precise window required for optimal performance.
Coulthard explained that some teams can’t heat the battery enough, others can’t keep it cool, and the overall operational systems suffer as a result. “It’s an ongoing process,” he said, noting that the development curve will persist through the year and that next season will finally see a stabilisation.
Ferrari Accumulates Momentum Under Hamilton and Leclerc
Ferrari’s gains are clear after Lewis Hamilton’s first triumph for the Meritorious team in Barcelona and Charles Leclerc’s win in the British Grand Prix. The Italian outfit now sits second with 285 points.
“If you’ve delivered a fast package but you have unreliability—yes, racing incidents—you have to accept that they’ll happen,” Coulthard added. “The conversation will be rigid and fact‑driven, and they will be based on facts.”
Championship Standings and the Hungarian Countdown
Mercedes sits atop the standings with 358 points, followed by Ferrari’s 285 and McLaren’s 195. The Hungarian Grand Prix, scheduled for 24‑26 July, will be the final round before the summer break and the next opportunity for the teams to halt or extend the gap.
As Mercedes addresses these mechanical vulnerabilities, the season‑long contest between the Maranello and Brackley teams gains new urgency, with engineers rushing to perfect the now‑critical software that controls every heartbeat of the race‑day car.
