George Russell Goes Beyond Disappointment After Tough Hungarian GP

George Russell beyond 'disappointed' after tough F1 Hungarian GP

George Russell fell from a championship‑hopeful position after a catastrophic anti‑stall on the first lap of the Hungarian Grand Prix, putting him 59 points behind teammate Kimi Antonelli as the 2026 Formula 1 season enters its winter break.

Severing a title bid

The Mercedes driver began the race in sixth but slid to the rear on the opening lap when his W17 struggled to respond after an anti‑stall trigger at lights out. He finished seventh, the slowest point‑scoring Mercedes out of the field.

“I’m past the point of disappointment now,” Russell admitted, noting that daily frustration would only worsen if he kept dwelling on the problems before him.

His 59‑point deficit now makes a championship miracle unlikely. The 28‑year‑old has spent 11 of the season’s 2026 races plagued by a string of technical setbacks.

Technical tangle recap

Earlier in the year, a water leak forced a new power unit into Russell’s car for the Haneda race, which failed to respond to throttle input on Sunday. The engine’s erratic behaviour meant the race was beyond his control.

In Japan, a safety car that waved at the wrong moment handed the prize to Antonelli, even though Russell had been battling Oscar Piastri for the win.

Montreal ended with an engine failure that took Russell from the front of the field, and Monaco saw him soundly off the pace, suffering two time penalties that prevented any chance of scoring.

Season outlook post‑break

Russell stressed that the team shares his frustration, calling for a review of internal processes to avoid further errors. He also acknowledged that other drivers face similar mechanical misfortunes, yet it seems to hit him more often.

Looking ahead, he remains ready to refocus after the summer shutdown. “I don’t need a break this year, but I definitely feel it’s time to shake off the bad luck from the first 11 races,” he said.

The 12 races after the break will decide whether the Mercedes‑driven championship lead can stay afloat, but Russell’s ambition to bounce back hinges on the reliability of his W17 and the resolve to keep moving forward.
