Piastri Calls Sainz Incident Unacceptable, Still Back McLaren’s F1 Plan

Oscar Piastri tears into "unacceptable" Carlos Sainz incident, accepts McLaren strategy

Oscar Piastri deviated from the front row after a lapped‑car collision in Hungary

Oscar Piastri lost the lead in the Hungarian Grand Prix when lapped by Carlos Sainz, who cut into his racing line and forced the McLaren driver to brake sharply. The incident left the Austrian contender short of time and cost him the advantage over teammate Lando Norris.

Blue‑flag glitches failed to clear the racecraft mishap

Blue flags were showing on the marshal lights, but the Porsche‑style steering‑wheel display that usually signals a lapped car was missing those indications for Piastri. He pointed out that the hit happened despite the lights, describing it as a “crash into a lapped car is never one of the things you expect to happen.” Piastri added, “Getting crashed into by a lapped car is never one of the things you expect that can go wrong in your race. I don’t really care if he didn’t see me. The fact that he didn’t and no one told him or there was a lack of complete awareness is unacceptable.”

Carlos Sainz explains the blind‑spot error

Sainz said he was fighting Fernando Alonso for a back‑of‑the‑field spot when he was unaware of Piastri’s position. “I didn’t realise I was about to get lapped, and on top of that I was in a big fight with Fernando trying to undercut him into the corner. I couldn’t have expected Oscar to be there,” he explained. Sainz added that better communication might have averted the collision but admitted it remains a racing incident.

Team strategy defence amid frustration

Despite his anger, Piastri maintained that McLaren’s decision to pit him before Norris was strategic. “I think the timing of my stop was fine,” he said. “We wanted to cover off Hamilton, which was perfectly normal. If not for the crash, I would still have been ahead of Lando.” Piastri also alluded that choosing a different pit sequence would not have changed the outcome and praised the team’s overall plan.

Race finish and lingering disappointment

While Lando Norris secured the first win for McLaren in 2026, Piastri was forced to retire with a gearbox failure, ruling him out of any podium run. The Austrian’s frustration remained focused on Sainz’s maneuver rather than the scouring pit work, yet he acknowledged that any interference from lapped traffic was the root cause for losing the front tie‑up.
