The 2027 Daytona 500 will begin with a historic finale: legend Jimmie Johnson will drive the No.48 for Hendrick Motorsports.
No.48, a legacy in motion
After 25 years under Hendrick’s ownership, the number that marks 83 Cup victories, seven championships, and every IndyCar start will return to Johnson for his 703rd and final NASCAR Cup Series start.
Johnson last led the No.48 at the 2020 Phoenix finale, then transitioned to the Co‑Owner’s Legacy Motor Club, driving the No.84 in subsequent Cup races.
Johnson reached out to Rick Hendrick, followed by talks with Alex Bowman, Ally, and NASCAR officials. The team agreed to relinquish the No.48 for Johnson’s last race.
“I am beyond words and so grateful, first and foremost, for your friendship, your mentorship, and making my family part of yours,” Johnson told Hendrick, adding thanks to Ally, the team and “Linda.” He added that “more exciting layers” will be revealed later.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. hinted a revival of the iconic No.25 for the car Bowman will drive at Daytona, but no confirmation has been issued for the 2027 number lineup, which will also see Bowman’s farewell season.
