Sony Perpetually Ends Physical Discs for PlayStation
Sony will discontinue all PlayStation physical discs in 2028, a move confirmed by CFO Lin Tao during the Q1 2026 earnings call.
The announcement, made a month after Sony unveiled its digital‑first vision, signals a definitive pivot away from optical media.
Lin Tao emphasized that digitalisation “has progressed across all content types”, positioning it as the core reason for the plan.
Justification Amid Fan Backlash
Lin Tao acknowledged the backlash that followed the original 2025 declarative post. He remarked that Sony “understands the strong emotions” of the community.
Despite many pleas to revive discs, the company reiterated it has “no plans to bring back physical discs.”
After the press, Twitter users flooded PlayStation’s accounts, and the CFO referenced these reactions in the earnings call.

Future Engagement and Upcoming Protest
Lin Tao affirmed Sony will continue “exploring alternate ways to engage PlayStation gamers” within the digital ecosystem.
He noted that Sony did not pre‑warn publishers, and that the company remains committed to its onward strategy.
Fans launched a voluntary “PlayStation Blackout” protest in August, questioning whether the company’s resolution will hold.
Observing Sony’s steadfast commitment, the final stance appears clear: a return to physical discs will not be considered, even as major players rally for a digital‑only future.
