PS5: 3D audio will be a big step forward, developers say

Sony itself admits that audio design for games has been pretty much neglected in recent years. That should now change with the PS5 and the support of its own 3D audio format.

For developers, this is a big step forward, as you can now find out in an interview. In it, Samuel Justice, Co-Founder and Supervising Sound Designer at Sweet Justice Sound, once spoke, who has participated in projects such as Fortnite, Half-Life: Alyx, Mortal Kombat 11 and others.

3D audio is expected to be a much richer experience in the future, comparable to Dolby Atmos or DTS: X, which have become particularly popular in the film sector.

“I think the raw computing power needed to create realistic audio models is largely overlooked. In the past, we have managed to create fairly good representations of acoustic modeling using many tricky and clever techniques. The ability to fully implement automated 3D audio is a big step forward for game audio and is sure to lead to much richer experiences. ”

In the past, there were some games that supported 3D sound formats on the PC, including Star Wars: Battlefront. However, this has not really prevailed, presumably because very few have a complex audio setup on the PC. This is more likely to be found on TV and home theater, which is why consoles are more likely to be used for this.
