Carson Kvapil capitalized on a late‑race caution to capture his second consecutive NASCAR O’Reilly Series win at Iowa Speedway, closing a 64‑race wait for his first victory.
Back‑to‑Back Brilliance
The 23‑year‑old driver, piloting JR Motorsports’ No. 1 Chevrolet, earned the victory after taking the checkered flag in double overtime. Ross Chastain, also from JR, led the bulk of the final run but a five‑lap yellow shifted the balance.
During the first overtime restart, Chastain spun tires for a brief edge, allowing Kvapil to surge into the front. Shortly after, Brent Crews made a slide into Ryan Sieg and Justin Allgaier, destabilizing all three and sending several other cars into contact. The melee sparked an on‑track spat between Allgaier and Crews once the race resumed.
At the second overtime restart, Kvapil once again secured a clean lead, followed by Rajah Caruth and JRM teammates William Sawalich and Sheldon Creed in a 1‑2‑3 sprint.
Race Breakdown
Stage one began with Ryan Sieg on pole, who maintained his lead to take the segment. Allgaier vaulted past Chastain just before the precautionary caution for Nathan Byrd’s spin, while Jesse Love’s drivetrain failures forced him into repairs and out of contention.
Creed immediately seized the helm on pit road for Stage two, and after a flurry of cautions for Kyle Sieg’s spin, Allgaier and Creed collided, allowing Allgaier to take the stage lead once more. The back‑and‑forth action saw Crews briefly overtake as the sequence unfolded.
Stage three saw Allgaier keep control until a caution for Alfredo’s spin with over 100 laps remaining. Most of the field stayed out, but Kevin Staropoli’s late contact with Sawyer triggered a run of small incidents. Even after the fifth yellow, Allgaier went on to lead until the premature caution pushed the race into overtime.
Key Observations
“We had a fast car and a fresh tire fear for the No. 7, which was the biggest concern,” Kvapil reflected. “I thought we had a real chance to close the gap, but the yellow at the end prevented it. We got the restart we needed and finished the job.”
Jacob Walter’s crew chief Rodney Childers noted stage adjustments that turned the early sluggish performance into a championship‑contending effort, underscoring JR’s readiness for deeper competition.
With the heat still simmering from the Iowa clash, the O’Reilly Series stands at a record‑tying 12 cautions, highlighting the high‑stakes environment that kept fans on edge throughout the weekend.
