Sony has halted the fan‑created multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 on PC after sending the developer a cease‑order letter.
Letter forces cancellation
Modder Speclizer announced on X that Sony Interactive Entertainment had demanded the mod remain unreleased. The request came mere days before the project’s planned September launch.
Mod’s evolution
Started in January 2026, the mod was initially set for simple 1v1 encounters. Over time, Speclizer expanded it to 4v4 matches, custom maps, and diverse loadouts, drawing inspiration from the 2013 Factions feature.
Fans had been eager for this content after Naughty Dog cancelled the original online multiplayer for TLOU 2 in 2023.
Future plans
Disappointed, Speclizer disclosed a new project on the horizon, promising another substantial fan‑focused effort soon.
Followers have expressed frustration, linking the cancellation with Sony’s broader moves such as ending physical PS games and disputing the Kojima Tool license.
With the mod’s release blocked, PC players will never see the ambitious multiplayer experience that had been in development.
