Bungie will launch a dedicated PvE mode in Marathon with the December 2026 Symbiosis update.
Symbiosis Update Features
The update introduces a permanent extraction‑shooter mode that lets players chase loot without the risk of rival runners stealing it. A fresh Team Deathmatch system offers a lower‑commitment way to sharpen skills and compete without sacrificing an entire run.
A brand‑new shell, Bishop, arrives at the same time as a social space where Runners can test weapons and abilities with one another.
Perimeter Revamp
Perimeter, the game’s first map, will be overhauled to match the depth of zones like Outpost and Night Marsh. New points of interest and the Tick Queen, a previously unseen enemy, will add variety and reward for exploration.
Marathon’s Future Direction
From March 2027 onward, Marathon will evolve into an interconnected system of permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences. The roadmap includes a redesigned onboarding process, a refactored Cradle with deeper shell progression, tighter questlines, additional alien foes, and a brand‑new zone.
Though Bungie reversed its Destiny 2 shutdown plans, the studio is clearly focused on restoring player confidence in both titles. The Symbiosis update positions Marathon as a more approachable entry point for newcomers to the extraction‑shooter genre.
