FIA has announced a rule tweak that will allow Rally1 and Rally2 kit cars to run 33‑mm turbo restrictors, a change expected to give them a 15‑hp advantage over plain Rally2 vehicles.
2027 WRC overhaul
Next season’s championship will feature all-new WRC27 cars and Rally2 cars fitted with the FIA’s 7,500‑euro update kit, competing under the same Rally1 umbrella. Toyota, Project Rally One and RMC Motorsport will field WRC27 vehicles, while M‑Sport has committed to running a Rally2 kit car. Hyundai, Lancia and Skoda have yet to confirm plans, but their Rally2 cars could also be in the mix.
Regulation tweak
The two classes have closely matched power, with Rally2 kit models weighing 10 kilograms less than WRC27 cars. To prevent a plain Rally2 car from eclipsing the new top‑class machines, FIA technical director Xavier Mestelan Pinon confirmed the 33‑mm restrictor for Rally1 and Rally2 kit cars, compared with a 32‑mm restrictor for Rally2 kits without the update. The change could create up to 15 horsepower of differential, with Rally2 cars projected to output 290 horsepower.
Voting timeline
FIA intends to table the regulation for a vote at the World Motor Sport Council meeting on 15 October.
