Verstappen Roasts Russell in F1, Vows to Send Him Straight to the Sauna

Max Verstappen responds to George Russell: "Maybe I should take him to the sauna!"

Cooling vests return to the forefront of the Malaysian Grand Prix weekend, sparking debate over whether the device should become mandatory.

Drivers Take Diverging Stances

Max Verstappen remains firm that the vest is an unnecessary addition. He labeled the garment uncomfortable and stressed that drivers should retain the choice, even if it means carrying an extra 0.5 kg of ballast.

“I don’t need that cooling vest and I won’t use it – maybe I suffer less from the heat, I guess,” Verstappen said during a Dutch media session at the paddock. He cited the physical demands of racing in hot, humid conditions as part of the sport’s core challenge.

George Russell Advocates for Vest Adoption

George Russell, driving for Mercedes, called for the vest’s introduction. He explained that Mercedes hasn’t developed the system fully because other budget allocations took priority.

Russell added that the FIA would benefit from increased funding for teams to pursue a cooling solution and urged the association to support such development.

FIA’s Balanced Stance

The FIA ultimately decided to keep the vest as a free choice. While the organization considered a mandate two years ago, strong opposition from several drivers, including Verstappen, led to preserving driver autonomy.

Under the current rule, teams may choose to install cooling vests or not, with no mandates or penalties attached.

Heat Training and Personal Adaptation

Verstappen highlighted his improved tolerance for the Sepang climate, claiming that focused training has enhanced his endurance. He argued that racing in heat is akin to a sauna, and that drivers must build resilience.

“You can’t just stroll around,” he added. “It’s about pushing to the limit, being fit enough to handle it.” He noted that at 18 he was more affected by heat but now incorporates heat or sauna sessions into his regimen.

Drivers Continue to Optimize Performance

Both drivers underscored their commitment to personal fitness and recovery. Verstappen mentioned staying hydrated and quickly refueling after races, while Russell called for adequate resources to develop cooling technology amid budget constraints.

The cooling vest debate underscores how Formula 1 balances driver comfort with the sport’s uncompromising performance demands.
