Denny Hamlin Details Costly Las Vegas Spin in Rough NASCAR Cup Race

Denny Hamlin explains costly Las Vegas spin in rough NASCAR Cup race

In a week that should have begun in confidence, Denny Hamlin finished the Las Vegas race 16th with no stage points, denting his points tally by 40 behind Kyle Larson.

From Pole to Pitfall

Hamlin secured pole position as part of a Joe Gibbs Racing 1‑2‑3‑4 sweep and led the first 39 laps. After a caution caused by Zane Smith’s spin, the crew pit, pushing the No. 11 team outside the top five and forcing it back to fourth for the remainder of the first stage. In the pursuit of those lost places, Hamlin pushed into the high groove of turns 3 and 4, spun, and the impact bent the front splitter, slid the car onto the apron and damaged the rear diffuser. A brief loss of fuel pressure later compounded the damage and cost him about a dozen more spots.

“I guess there was marbles up there, but I was just trying to get back to track position that we lost and just went up there and got the marbles and spun out, obviously damaged the car where it was nothing like it was before,” Hamlin told reporters. “There’s nothing you can do now post‑race, so you just get to go on to the next race and see if you can find a way to win.”

Chase Consequences

Hamlin reflected on the first half of the Chase: “Not smooth, definitely not smooth. We haven’t had any catastrophic days, but we’ve certainly had our fair share of not performing.” The 14‑point loss from Larson, who finished second but earned only one stage point, left the 11‑car 40 points shy of the championship leader.

The next chapter of the Chase opens with the weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway, a 1.5‑mile intermediate track where the No. 11 team seeks to regain footing. Hamlin’s focus will be on recovering lost ground and translating the lessons from Las Vegas into the tempests ahead.
