The core features that Sony has already confirmed for the PlayStation 5 include 3D audio and adaptive triggers, which represent a significant development in both areas.

The audio design for games has been neglected in recent generations, according to Sony, and the rumble feature of the controller is almost a relic again. That is why the PS5 is starting from scratch and promises a completely different experience of how games will be played in the future.

In an interview with Sony Interactive President, Jim Ryan, he explained this using Gran Turismo Sport:

“Once you experience 3D audio and adaptive feedback controllers, you will find that it is an amazing change. It's completely different to play Gran Turismo Sport with the PS5 controller. I had a good race with my existing controller, but when I experience the fine road surface with haptic feedback and adaptive trigger, I can't go back to the original. ”

Earlier, Sony explained the adaptive triggers by saying that you will feel very precisely what road surface you are on – just smooth asphalt or a gravel road. Shooters will be able to tell the difference between a normal shot or more powerful ammunition with the appropriate recoil, to name just two examples.

As far as 3D audio is concerned, this has now become the norm, especially for films in the form of Dolby Atmos and DTS: X. The sound not only comes from the sides or feels somewhere from above, but can also be placed precisely in the room.
