What Caused Mercedes’ Tough Week at the Bahrain Grand Prix

The mechanisms at play behind Mercedes' difficult Bahrain GP weekend

Mercedes will investigate why its updated floor and sidepod package failed to produce the usual speed at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.

Update Performance at Sepang

The W17 showed encouraging pace in the high‑speed corners of Sepang, yet the car struggled through the slower sections. Team‑principal Bradley Lord noted that the drivers had to “turn the car on the throttle” in these turns, prioritising tyre temperature over speed.

Lord added that the combination of the new update, track temperature and the circuit’s surface texture created an “interaction” that prevented the car from reaching its normal performance envelope.

Track Surface and Tyre Heat

Sepang’s uneven surface forces tyres to deform more when filling gaps, amplifying mechanical hysteresis and generating excess heat. This level of tyre strain was higher than in familiar circuits, reducing grip and accelerating tyre degradation.

The roughness of the circuit also affects the aerodynamic flow underneath the car. CFD models use friction coefficients to simulate this, but Sepang’s texture altered the boundary layer, increasing turbulence and disrupting downforce.

Aerodynamic Assessment

Teams rely on smooth track surfaces for accurate airflow prediction. Singapore’s more predictable circuit data gave Mercedes a clear reading of its aerodynamics, whereas Sepang’s irregularities introduced uncertainty.

With the car’s “base understanding” still being tested, the Mercedes factory is conducting further simulations to, as Lord phrased it, “work through the 3‑D problem” and real‑time track data.

Power Unit Failure

George Russell’s retirement after a mechanical failure in the power unit cost Mercedes a potential double podium. Mr. Lord said the initial inspection confirmed a definitive mechanical fault on the PU side, and the team is investigating the root cause.

The lost points were a blow for both the drivers and the team’s championship prospects.

Looking Ahead

Championship‑wide, Mercedes is now tasked with understanding the interaction between its new update package and Sepang’s unique asphalt. The insights gained will shape both the remainder of the current season and the development roadmap for 2027.
