Fabio Quartararo Fears Fuel‑Thirsty Yamaha After Intense Motegi Battle

Fabio Quartararo worried about fuel-thirsty Yamaha after Motegi battles

Fabio Quartararo admitted fuel conservation curtailed his performance at the Japanese Grand Prix, explaining why he finished his home race 12th, unchanged from start.

Fuel Management Ruined Yamaha’s Speed

From lap seven the Yamaha rider battled high consumption, forcing him to throttle back on every section. He remained at 70 % throttle through Turn 2–Turn 3, the back straight and the main straight, restraining the throttle to keep the fuel curve safe.

“I could go faster, but I had to keep an eye on the throttle,” Quartararo explained. “ Even with the slipstream I had to close it.” The Frenchman also noted an unexpected surge of consumption early in the race, which left him unsure of when he would lean over the finish line.

Yamaha’s Power Gap Stalls the Team

The Japanese GP highlighted the marque’s lack of top speed. Quarterfinals saw all four Yamaha entrants finish in the bottom four places, a trend repeated over the weekend.

Team tactics suffered as fuel pressure clamped their top power output. “Why not finish the race? I had the red light from the outset,’’ Quartararo said, describing his sporadic weight on the pedal. “There was a green, yellow and a red, and it was rough.”

Future Prospects and 2027 Move

Despite a “reasonably average” result, the rider’s points for 2027 remain a priority. “I’ve even more impatient to get on Honda,” Quartararo said, hinting at a switch next season.

Nevertheless, Yamaha’s paddock will need to reassess fuel strategy and power balance before claiming Irish domestic race. The Japanese GP results give a clear message: consumption and power are on the same line to affect race outcomes.
