Mercedes Power Unit Issues Threaten Kimi Antonelli’s Title Run
Sky Sports Formula 1 analyst Naomi Schiff warned that repeated power‑unit failures at Mercedes could rob Kimi Antonelli of race wins and endanger his championship bid.
Antonelli tops the standings with 320 points, 84 points ahead of team‑mate George Russell, who bowed out of the Bahrain Grand Prix after a failure denied him a podium.
Schiff highlighted a broader reliability problem touching multiple Mercedes power units, stressing that Russell’s exit underscored the depth of the issue and would likely frustrate team boss Toto Wolff.
“It’s not great that they’re happening; other cars have had issues,” she said on the Sky Sports F1 Show after the Bahrain‑Malaysia race.
Such setbacks could cost Antonelli vital victories, while a drop in constructors’ points opens the door for rival teams to close the gap.
Schiff cited the recent Red Bull sprint, where Isack Hadjar nearly matched Max Verstappen before points slipped, illustrating how competitors stand to gain.
“You can understand why there’s frustration across the board. Poor George … I feel for him, but 2024 was his year and the car finally matched his pace,” Schiff concluded.
