Mercedes Names Antonelli & Russell as Singapore GP Test Pilots

Why Kimi Antonelli and George Russell are "test pilots" for Mercedes at Singapore GP

Mercedes Formula 1 chief Toto Wolff has officially labelled his drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell as “test pilots” for the Singapore Grand Prix weekend, as the team runs two distinct versions of the W17.

Targeted Upgrade Woes in 2026

After winning 11 out of 16 races in 2026, the Silver Arrows were challenged by Red Bull when Max Verstappen seized the lead from pole at Singapore, the first loss since Montreal.

Mercedes fitted a major update at the Sepang circuit, hoping fresh tweaks would propel the W17 past its rivals.

Early evidence suggests the new package may not have delivered the expected gains, prompting a split‑spec trial in Singapore to isolate the problem.

Singapore Sprint Highlights

In the sole practice session, Russell set the fastest time of 1:32.274 on softs, a full 1.25 seconds ahead of Antonelli, who was seventh.

Antonelli’s best lap on medium compound surfaced at 1:32.406, 0.52 seconds off Verstappen’s 1:31.887.

Both drivers are expected to use the data from this sprint to fine‑tune the newer and older chassis.

Wolff Explains the Dual‑Spec Approach

“The run‑up to Baku was tricky, with temperatures that differ from the rest of the month,” Wolff said in a team briefing.

He added, “Track conditions make it unclear whether the upgrade is truly faulty or just affected by the surface. That’s why we chose Singapore – an outlier – to run a controlled experiment and dissect both setups.

“Although running two cars simultaneously isn’t ideal, it compels us to refine our direction and snapshot what works best for next season.”

Strategic Balance Under the Cost Cap

Wolff stressed the importance of prudent spend, noting that existing upgrades, notably the Montreal tune, had re‑affirmed the W17’s competitiveness.

He said, “We’re evaluating whether to keep moments of change incremental or to launch larger updates, especially under the $215 million cap. If a big change fails, you’re left with a hard reset.

“The key question remains: why didn’t the recent upgrade deliver? Our conclusions will inform 2027 strategy.”

Outlook Toward the 2027 Campaign

The dual‑spec data from Singapore will feed Mercedes’ design and performance teams as they eye a return to double championships, poised to break a six‑year drought.

Both Antonelli and Russell are set to stay on the track at Baku to further assess the newer W17’s behaviour, charting the path for the Silver Arrows’ next season of evolution.
