Formula 2 champion Rafael Camara will become the first driver to inherit a Haas F1 seat in 2027, succeeding Esteban Ocon after his departure was confirmed on 30 September.
Haas hires Rafael Camara
Haas has signed the 21‑year‑old Brazilian on a multi‑year contract, pairing him with Oliver Bearman for the 2027 campaign. Camara’s new role is a key step in the team’s strategy to develop youthful talent after two less‑successful seasons for Ocon.
Ayao Komatsu, team boss, praised Camara’s junior‑formula record, noting his “raw speed” and “impressive adaptability” during the Portimao TPC test. Komatsu added that the partnership will provide a supportive environment for the rising star.
Camara’s rapid rise
Camara clinched the 2024 Formula Regional European Championship title and the 2025 FIA Formula 3 crown, both with dominant performances. He currently leads Nikola Tsolov by seven points in the F2 standings and could become the only driver to win FRECA, F3 and F2 in successive seasons if he secures the F2 title.
The driver, a Scuderia Ferrari Driver Academy graduate, expressed gratitude to Gene Haas, Ayao Komatsu, and the academy for their support. He highlighted the importance of preparing for the new challenge and working closely with the Haas team to master the car.
Rumours that Camara would eclipse rivals Leonardo Fornaroli and Ryo Hirakawa were confirmed during the season, with all three participating in the TPC programmes. Camara’s Ferrari background and strong ties to Haas through parts supply were cited as additional advantages.
Implications for 2027 grid
With Camara and Bearman taking two seats at Haas, only one Grand Prix spot remains open for 2027, alongside two positions projected for Racing Bulls that will likely keep Liam Lawson and rookie Arvid Lindblad. The binding of Bearman with Haas is an open secret, reflecting the team’s confidence in the driver’s rapid development.
Haas’s decision marks a shift toward nurturing homegrown talent, positioning the team to counter the established drive of the next season’s grid. The 2027 lineup is shaping up to be a fresh mix of experience and raw potential, and the outcome will be watched closely by teams and supporters alike.
