Gresini Racing is braced for the MotoGP 850cc transition, asserting that satellite and factory teams are likely to remain evenly matched under the upcoming 2027 regulations.
Gresini’s Outlook for the 2027 Shift
Team manager Michele Masini has expressed confidence that the balance between factory outfits and satellite allies will not tilt markedly in the new era, despite the comprehensive overhaul that the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme is imposing for the 2027 championship.
Masini stresses that the on‑track data gathered during testing will become a crucial asset. He highlighted the importance of early tyre management, especially since the switch from Michelin to Pirelli introduces an unfamiliar compound dynamic.
New Technical Landscape
Regulatory changes slash engine capacity to 850cc, tighten aerodynamic allowances, and ban ride‑height devices. The tyre shift further complicates performance coefficient calculations, resetting the competitive grid as the sport moves away from its previous generation of machines.
Manufacturers, including Ducati, have already begun trialing 850cc models in December, with development India continuing with extensive work over the coming months.
Satellite Teams’ Adaptation Strategy
Satellite outfits face the dual challenge of grasping the new machinery and mastering Pirelli’s tyres swiftly. While factory rallies have exclusive access to exhaustive private testing sessions, satellite crews had to wait until the Spielberg event last month to touch the new bikes.
Masini underscores that technical fidelity from Ducati will persist. “Support remains unchanged; we work together daily throughout every Grand Prix,” he says, noting that any alterations in bike character will also hinge on tyre behavior.
Development Timeline and Tests
Following the debut of the GP27 at Red Bull Ring, the club anticipates the first pre‑season trials in Sepang in February. Those sessions will provide the definitive vision of Pirelli’s new MotoGP compounds, as the brand is still maturing its product for the season ahead.
The team also points to the possibility of additional insights from the post‑Valencia GP Tuesday test, reminding that weather variables can influence tyre performance—something they aim to decode in the Singaporean and Thai vignettes.
Ahead of the 2027 Season
With a full factory‑spec GP26 currently powered by Alex Marquez and a round‑old GP25 for team‑mate Fermin Aldeguer, Gresini remains one of the most autonomous outfits on the grid. The upcoming rule changes present a chance to resolve early technical stumbling blocks and potentially secure early round advantages.
As the 2027 calendar nears, the club’s anticipation hinges on successful early adaptation of the new 850cc chassis and Pirelli tyres—a combination that may turn the tide for satellite competitors that quickly master the new parameters.
