It is currently still completely unclear whether Sony will actually launch a successor to PlayStation VR. The current sales figures of 5 million units are quite considerable, but are they also sufficient to continue investing in this area? If you believe a well-known game developer, at least a new version is planned for this year, whereby one should probably refer to the current headset.
At least that is what Immersive VR Education Ltd, which is known for Apollo 11 or Titanic VR, claims. In the course of the current annual report, it says that Sony will also launch a new PlayStation VR headset in addition to the PS5.
“In 2020, Sony will launch the PlayStation 5 and a new version of the PlayStation VR headset (PSVR) that will further expand the high-end VR user base. The company plans to support this device with its current suite of showcase software. ”
It is quite conceivable that Sony will revise the current PlayStation VR headset again, be it from the point of view of production costs, but possibly also to make it more compatible with the PS5. As for the “current suite of showcase software”, it looks rather sobering in 2020, as there are still no large VR titles.
It remains to be seen whether the potentially new version will be a full successor to PlayStation VR. From the official side, the only thing about PlayStation VR is that you don't plan a successor or similar in parallel to the launch of the PS5, which definitely makes sense.
