It is well known that the PS5 will have some backward compatibility. For the time being, this only applies to the PS4 and not as expected for all previous PlayStation consoles.
There are rumors of this again and again, including these days (via), where this is sold as a clear fact. However, if you look back at official statements from Sony on the PS5, no one has mentioned that it will actually be so. At some point it was vaguely said that full downward compatibility was sought, but without guarantee or confirmation.
The different system architectures, which should prevent general compatibility with the PS5, are likely to be problematic here. Sony will have to take a few detours here, provided that this feature is really aimed for in full. Only the PS4 and PS5 have a similar architecture.
Current surveys also show that downward compatibility is not that high among players. This feature is only desired in 4th (3) position, and if so, probably more related to the PS4 and not to older consoles.
It remains to be seen how far Sony will enable backward compatibility on the PS5. Information is expected at the speculated PS5 event in February.
